Emissary by Thomas Locke Book Review

Emissary by Thomas Locke

January 12th - 19th

With his twenty-first birthday, Hyam begins a journey that will lead him to his destiny--or his doom.

Hyam has always shown a remarkable ability to master languages, even those left unspoken for a thousand years. But now the shadow of suspicion that was cast upon him as a child prodigy at Long Hall is lengthening, and he must keep his identity hidden--or face annihilation.

As Hyam's mother slips toward death, she implores him to return to Long Hall before he settles down to farm his land. This journey born from duty becomes an impassioned quest for the truth. War is coming swiftly, and Hyam must rely upon his newfound powers and the friends he meets along the way in order to unravel the puzzling past and ensure that he--and the realm--will have a future.

In a world where magic has been outlawed for centuries, one young man discovers that he possesses powers beyond his wildest dreams.

But he does not realize how pivotal this gift will be in the days to come.

Except for the healing arts, magicking is a punishable offense in the realm. The only places it is still practiced are the Long Halls scattered throughout the land--isolated haunts of wizards called mages and their long-suffering students.

But hidden rivers of power course deep beneath the earth, and not everyone has obeyed the edict banning magic. Vixens lie in wait on the Galwyn road. A mysterious race of telepaths comes and goes invisibly. It is even rumored that Elves still hide among the wizened trees. And somewhere beyond the badlands, a growing menace threatens the hard-won peace of the realm.

This young man could stem the ominous tide . . . but only by turning away from everyone and everything he has ever known. And facing dangers he cannot fathom.

My review;

I just finished reading , "Emissary" and I found it very interesting. It is the kind of book that makes you stop and think about what could happen if some things that have been made a crime, were to be found and used again, and  what could really happen. I  liked the storyline and I  the way that the character reacted to his new obstacles before him. Hyam has a huge new road to follow and it is something that he could never even have imagined. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book by Revell Publishing and all opinions a re my own.

My review;
Author Lisa Harris has done it again. I could not put, "Hidden Agenda", down from the moment I began to read the first page. This novel as it all. The kind of suspense that keeps you continuously guessing and enough ideas  that you never even thought about. Add all of that to a little romance mixed in and you have it all.  Oliva is not sure who or what she can trust. Will Michael be the person she should trust? Will they be able to keep each other safe? I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book by Revell Publishers and all opinions a re my own.

About the Author
Angela V. Cook lives a very unexciting, but never boring, life with her husband and two children just outside of Detroit. Like most writers, she’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember and can’t imagine a life that doesn’t involve creating worlds.

Angela loves to write novels for teens because it’s the best outlet for her sarcastic personality, immature sense of humor, and love of romantic firsts. Her idea of the perfect day involves a quiet house, a good book, and a piece of cheesecake. Or two.

My Little Life of Jesus by Karen Williamson Book Review

Description:
My Little Life of Jesus introduces the story of Jesus' life to 3-to 5-year-olds. It follows Jesus from His birth, being baptized by John, meeting the disciples and teaching them how to pray, telling His stories to people in nearby towns and villages, right through to His return to the heavenly Father. Illustrated throughout with adorable artwork from a popular Candle Books artist, there is also a map included to show the land where Jesus lived. This padded hardcover comes complete with a presentation page for gift or award giving.

My review;

  This is one of the most adorable books I have ever seen for little children to learn about Jesus. It is just the right size for a young child to hold and illustrations are beautiful. I think this would be a great addition to anyone's personal library and would be great to have in a nursery school. I give the book a 5/5. I was given this book by Kregel Publications and all opinions are my own.

Five Killer Destinations on Your Orcas Island Retreat

Guest Post;    thank you so much for author Tracy Weber taking the time to be with us today.

The books in my Downward Dog Mystery series are all set in Pacific Northwest locations that I know and love. My second, A Killer Retreat, takes place on Orcas Island, a small wooded treasure off the Washington coast. The island is only accessible by ferry, so once you get there, you are truly an ocean away from it all.

Of course, no writing project would feel complete without research trips, and I took more than a few. If you’re ever near the Washington coast, be sure to visit my five favorite spots on Orcas. You’ll be glad you did.

Tracy’s Top Five Orcas Island Destinations

  1. Doe Bay Resort and Retreat. This relaxing retreat center sits on 38 acres and was one of several meditation centers that inspired my vision for the Elysian Springs Resort, which is at the heart of A Killer Retreat. Visitors can choose from houses, cabins, tent sites and yurts. My German shepherd, Tasha, says that if you take your dog—and who wouldn’t?—you should stay in Eden, the cabin right outside the garden. Tasha likes wandering along Doe Bay’s trail system, resting on the beach, and staring at the deer that graze in the fields surrounding the cabin.

  1. East sound. No vacation would be complete without wandering the streets of a quaint little town in which I can drink a margarita, browse through a local book store, and buy some can’t-live-without trinket. Eastsound fits all of these needs perfectly! The pie shop I reference in A Killer Retreat has unfortunately closed, but be sure to check out Kathryn Taylor designer chocolates!

  1. Olga. This tiny little town sits in halfway between Doe Bay and Eastsound. Its primary attractions are the Orcas Island Artworks Cooperative Gallery and Café Olga. The food is great, and I never manage to get out of the gallery without buying a memento or two. Both businesses are temporarily located in Eastsound due to a fire, but they will be back in their original location in spring of 2015.
  2. Mountain Lake Trail. Wandering along this trail is Tasha-dog’s favorite part of every Orcas Island vacation. The three-and-a-half-mile loop hugs the lake’s coastline and is home to a variety of Northwest vegetation and wildlife. As day hikes go, it’s relatively easy. Even my husband can manage to make it all the way around, so grandma and your toddler will probably be fine.
  3. Pawkis. This may not be an official tourist destination, but no trip with Fido is complete without a visit to the local pet food store. This fun Eastsound business offers healthy pet food, treats, toys, and beach essentials including doggie lifejackets. For dogs with sensitive stomachs, they offer single ingredient treats like Tasha-dog’s favorite, dehydrated lamb lung. (Gross!)

The above are only a small sampling of what Orcas island has to offer. Much of it can’t be easily described; the rest is a forested playground of beaches, open green fields, and cliff-side ocean views. Believe me—and my yoga teacher/sleuth Kate—once you arrive, you might never want to leave.

Yogi Kate must clear her name of murder in this charming yoga mystery
When Kate Davidson gets an offer to teach yoga classes to wedding guests at the Elysian Springs resort, she jumps at the opportunity, even though it means being forced to endure the wedding ceremony of the center’s two caretakers.
Avoiding the M-word turns out to be the least of Kate’s problems when a wedding guest is found floating face-down in the resort’s hot tub, shortly after a loud, public (and somewhat embarrassing) fight with Kate. The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she’s forced to team up with boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. But they’ll have to solve the murder before the police arrest Kate, or her next gig may last a lifetime–behind bars.

ADAMANT final front coverAdamant (The Alliance Series #1)
By Emma L. Adams
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy
Age category: Adult
Release Date: 11 March 2015

Blurb:
On an alternative 21st-century Earth in which our world is one of many in the Multiverse, the Inter-World Alliance exists to keep the peace between the worlds, and keep the monsters out.

Ada Fletcher is twenty-one, keeps a collection of knives in her room, and is more interested in fighting than her day job as a cashier. She also risks her life on a daily basis, helping refugees from a devastating magical war on her homeworld hide on the low-magic Earth. But when she's taken into custody by the Alliance, her unusual magic makes her a prime suspect for a supervisor's suspicious death.

For Kay Walker, whose family founded the organization, there has never been any doubt that his future is with the Alliance – even if it means dealing with sarcastic centaurs and dangerous monsters in the dark Passages between worlds. But when his supervisor is murdered, Kay discovers that a research project might have been the reason, and faces the choice of whether to ignore his instincts or risk becoming the next target, not to mention digging into the Alliance's history and memories he'd rather keep buried. And there's something not quite right about the strange, fierce girl he arrested as a suspect.

The last thing Ada wants is to help the infuriating Alliance guard who arrested her, but it soon becomes clear that the Alliance knows too much about Adamant's offworld origins. More, in fact, than she knows herself. Now she has to choose between loyalty to her family, and helping the Alliance save the Earth – and the Multiverse – from a deadly enemy.

Emma AdamsAbout the Author:
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing speculative fiction. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also entertained her creative writing group and baffled her tutors by submitting strange fantasy tales featuring dragons and supernatural monsters to workshops. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma refuses to settle down and be normal. When not embarking on wild excursions and writing fantasy novels, she edits and proofreads novels for various publishing houses and reads an improbable number of books. Emma is currently working on the Alliance series, a multiple-universe adult fantasy featuring magic, monsters, cool gadgets and sarcasm. Her upper-YA urban fantasy Darkworld series is published by Curiosity Quills Press.

BLURB:

Workplace comedy is always fun but when the company in question in H.E.LLc (Hades Enterprises LLc) and your job is being Lucifer, let's just say, there are some unique challenges beyond Casual Fridays and who keeps taking your lunch out of the break room. Even if Hell really is just a place where evil is tracked and analyzed in endless cubicles-no brimstone and not a human soul in sight-there's no room for error. This Lucifer (who is the seventh unlucky archangel to get the position behind the black onyx desk) is about to have his entire world rattled when a very sweet and likable mortal woman crosses his path.

After all, angels can't lie. And when Jayne Hamilton wants to know what he does for a living, all bets are off. Because "dating" isn't exactly in the cosmic scheme of the Eternity Gambit, but Love... Well, Love is never really off the table.

Now, if Lucifer can just figure out how to win the girl and get himself fired, he'll be one very very happy angel.

"Filled with sparkling wit and devilish charm, DEVIL TO PAY is a delightful visit to the Shangri-La of Hell!" -- Erin Quinn, The Three Fates of Ryan Love, NYT Bestselling Author

"Only Renee Bernard could make dating Satan sexy as sin! Funny, fresh, irreverent and utterly adorable!" - Dakota Cassidy, National Bestselling Author

First book in the new Eternity Gambit series from USA Today bestselling author Renee Bernard. This is a romantic comedy series with an original paranormal twist that defies categorization and turns every notion of Heaven and Hell on its ear.

Excerpt;

Jayne!” He shook his head. “I didn’t expect to see you—ever again.”

Didn’t you?” She decided to jump in full steam ahead before her courage evaporated. “You deliberately drop a bombshell of an announcement on a woman about being some mythical ruler of Hell, play with her sense of reality and then what? Did you expect me to just laugh it off and go on with my life?”

Luke froze. “I don’t think I had any expectations and I don’t think I proclaimed to be mythical, Jayne. But perhaps we should let Malcolm leave before we finish our conversation.”

I don’t mind staying!” Malcolm protested. “I can be very quiet over here in the corner and you won’t even know I’m in the room.”

Jayne blushed furiously. “I…I apologize. I shouldn’t have…started in…”

Oh, don’t apologize.” Malcolm’s look was nothing short of incendiary admiration. “This is priceless.”

Lucifer came around the desk effectively rescuing her from the smoldering look Malcolm was giving her. “Jayne, I was about to introduce you to Malcolm, but I’m starting to think that that would be a mistake.”

Not at all!” Malcolm protested. “I’m the soul of courtesy, Miss Hamilton.”

Lucifer began again. “Jayne, this is Malcolm. My right hand, so to speak.”

How do you do?” Jayne held out her hand, determined hold her own in the world of weird she’d just reinvaded. “Are you an angel, too?”

Malcolm’s warm hand enveloped hers, his smile brightening at the question, amping up his charm to an almost bone-melting level. “Oh, I’m no angel! But I’m flattered you would think so.” He gave Lucifer a preening look and a wink of a challenge. “I like her.”

I like her more. Behave, Malcolm. And let go of her hand.”

I apologize.” Malcolm released his grip, stepping back to defer to his boss. “I forgot myself in the moment.”

Okay, that’ll be all, Malcolm.” Lucifer dismissed him more firmly, and Malcolm bowed and obeyed, retreating to the elevator and disappearing behind its doors. “You were saying, Miss Hamilton?”

I…” Jayne took a deep breath. “I believe you.”
